Greenpeace faz futurologia com líderes mundiais

Painéis colocados no aeroporto de Copenhaga mostram os líderes mundiais daqui a dez anos, pedindo desculpas por não terem agido enquanto podiam deter as alterações climáticas. A campanha de sensibilização é da autoria da Greenpeace e da 'tcktcktck.org', uma aliança de organizações ambientalistas.
A partir de hoje, os passageiros que transitarem no aeroporto de Copenhaga serão recebidos com painéis que apresentam os rostos de vários líderes mundiais, envelhecidos através de ferramentas de manipulação de imagem, colocando-os daqui a dez anos a desculpar-se pelo seu fracasso na hora em que podiam ter detido as alterações climáticas.
Este apelo à acção chega poucos dias antes do início da Cimeira de Copenhaga e tem, segundo o site da Greenpeace, o objectivo de "assegurar um acordo justo, ambicioso e vinculativo" entre os dirigentes das principais potências, incentivando-os a assumir as suas responsabilidades para com o meio ambiente numa altura em que ainda é possível atenuar o impacto da mudança do clima.
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Nicolas Sarkozy, Barack Obama, Angela Merkel, Gordon Brown e Lula Da Silva são alguns dos rostos envelhecidos, surgindo ao lado da legenda que, em português, significará algo semelhante a: "Lamento. Podíamos ter detido uma alteração climática catastrófica... não o fizemos." Nos painéis consta ainda o repto à acção:"Age agora - muda o futuro".

Japão: país inimigo das baleias!!!

Madeira, Portugal — The International Whaling Commission, the peak international body for dealing with whaling and whale conservation, has failed to save any whales this year.

After two weeks of talks among the 85 IWC member countries, it was agreed that the only decision that could be agreed upon by consensus was to keep talking for another year.

Meanwhile, Japan looks set to embark on another season of “scientific” whaling at the end of the year.

Japan remains whale enemy number one

Each year, whaling countries report at the IWC meeting on the number of whales they killed over the year. How did Japan fare this year?

Well, under the Japanese whaling program, 1004 whales were killed during the last year. n total, 1936 whales were reported as killed. The total includes aboriginal/subsidence whaling hunts being undertaken around the world, as well as ongoing commercial whaling by Iceland and Norway.

So, Japan is still the whales’ enemy number one.

What’s more, Japan has aggressively expanded its “scientific” whaling over the past five years and pushed for an end to the ban on commercial whaling.

Figures provided by Japan also show that almost a third of the whales Japan harpooned in the Antarctic last summer were pregnant, making a mockery of its “scientific” program. It was also reported that four lactating mother whales were killed — a practice that is even banned by the archaic IWC rules governing commercial whaling.

What the Australian government needs to do

Australian Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, was at the IWC meeting and took a strong stand for the whales. He was pushing the Commission to become an organisation for whale conservation and not whaling. He pushed the development of conservation management plans for important regions for whales, as well as leading the development of non-lethal scientific research of cetaceans.

But, now more than ever, it is abundantly clear that Japan will not stop its whaling program unless more pressure is applied and that the IWC can not be relied upon as a body for resolving questions around the “scientific” whaling program.

Take action

We need to ask the Australian government to put more pressure on the Japanese government to bring an end to whaling now. The Rudd Government has been threatening to take legal action against Japan over its whaling program for years now.

At the same time, there is a legal action in Japan that could help expose the whaling industry. This is the prosecution against the Tokyo Two, our two activists who exposed corruption at the heart of Japanese scientific whaling.

Meet Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki. These two Japanese activists found compelling evidence of corruption within the Japanese whaling program last year. Instead of investigating the whaling industry, Japanese authorities responded by arresting Junichi and Toru. They have been denied their liberty for over 6 months, awaiting trial later this year.

20 March 2009: Whale supporters joined Greenpeace activists in a vigil outside the Japanese Embassy in Canberra. We called for an end to whaling, as well as justice for Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki. These two Japanese Greenpeace activists, also known as the Tokyo Two, were arrested after exposing a scandal within Japan’s whaling industry last year.

Enquanto lê, este nossos activistas são escalando chaminés, encadeando-se em correias transportadoras e bloqueando o transporte de carvão em vários locais em Itália.
Eles vão ocupar Centrais térmicas a carvão durante a Cimeira do G8 que começa hoje em Itália e exigem que os dirigentes mundiais que se reunem para a cimeira, façam sérios compromissos para reduzir as emissões mundiais de gases.
Podemos agir com eles. Podemos exigir que os líderes mundiais assumam a responsabilidade pessoal para evitar uma mudança climática catastrófica. Podemos "virar" a Terra!!!
